How To Find Your ‘Why’
04/22/2025
No. 012
If money, fear, or opinions didn’t matter, what would you do with your life? Would you continue living the same way you are right now, or would you do something different?
What would you change? Where would you go? How would you spend your time?
Believe it or not, most people settle for where they are in life. But I believe we all have the ability to achieve more…we just need to find our ‘why.’
Life is inherently dynamic; there's a lot going on. We need to make money to support ourselves and our families. We've got to be smart with how we allocate our time. And we have the constant distraction of world news as we’re inundated with endless opinions other than our own. It’s easy to get caught up in the life we live as we do what’s considered normal.
But what's normal? It’s almost as if we have a default plan has been laid out in front of us: Get an education, get a career, meet a soulmate, buy a house, and live a happy life. The end. Those are all great benchmarks, I'm not arguing that. But what else do you want to add?
If the default plan is directed by your purpose, great! But everyone is different, and others may have a different plan in mind. It could be the same benchmarks in a different order, or something wildly different. But why and how are we driven to follow the paths that we do, and how can we better place ourselves on the one that's right for us?
What you need is clarity of purpose—something not everybody has—and it can be a superpower. Clarity of purpose means having a deep understanding of why you do what you do. It’s when your goals, actions, and values align as you direct your efforts towards what’s most important to you.
To find it, you need to answer these 3 questions:
What are you passionate about?
What are you naturally good at?
What problem do you want to solve?
Think long and hard about these, as they will be some of the core ideas in directing you towards your ‘why.’ I'm also going to put emphasis on passionate. It's not just something you enjoy, rather, it's attached to your core being as an extension of your soul. So what are you truly passionate about?
This isn't a secret formula, cheat code, or a shortcut. It's a deep, critical thinking process that requires you to dig into your past and search for how it's helped develop you into the person you are today. It's the overarching reason you do what you do. You aren't doing yourself any favors by half-heartedly going about this process.
Be the person you really want yourself to be.
An Action to Implement
I encourage you to journal on these prompts. Come up with answers for each question and really narrow it them down to the most important. Then ask yourself:
What do you value most? What legacy do you want to leave?
