The Waiting Room

The doors you’re keeping open are preventing you from walking through any of them.
We all have ideas and aspirations. We dream of moving to that distant city, visiting the picturesque vacation spot, and chasing the career change that is bound to make us complete.
But the farthest most people ever get is a google search.
I get it, it’s hard to commit. But the reality is that you only fear commitment because doing so means shutting many of the other doors you had open.
Time spent bringing the career change to fruition requires you to put your travel aspirations on the back burner. Building your ideal physique means saying goodbye to frequent late nights and the “friends” who won’t support your journey to a healthier lifestyle.
It may be hard to swallow, but you can’t have it all. And those who try never make any real strides. The biggest thing you need to remember:
An unopened door isn’t a possibility you’re holding; it’s a life you’re not living while you hold it.
That’s because you aren’t holding it open for opportunity, you’re doing so to avoid the grief of closing them.
When you close that door, it’s a symbolic completion to the end of something in your life. Whether that be a relationship or a sports career, it still needs closure.
Keeping the relationship door open is preventing you from moving on and committing to someone without bringing emotional baggage along with you. Hanging onto that old sports career is reminiscent of Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite. Instead, take your knowledge and experience to your next phase of life.
What I want you to remember here is that the real choice isn’t “all of them” vs. “one.” It’s “one” vs. “none.” By choosing one door to go through and concentrate your efforts on fully, you aren’t losing those other lives, you’re committing to actually building a life instead of standing in the waiting room.
An Action to Implement
Name one door that you’ve been keeping open. Be honest.
Ask yourself: “If I knew my time was finite, would I pay to keep this door open, or would I close it and walk through the one that matters most?”
Choose a door this week, and close it.
